Providence Catholic Hosts Fifth Annual Green and White
Hall of Fame Dinner
(New Lenox) Providence Catholic High School hosted their
fifth Annual Green and White Hall of Fame Dinner in
early April. “This was a fantastic event for our
alumni, faculty and staff at Providence. The dinner was
well attended and it was great to hear the many stories
from the inductees on what Providence Catholic meant to
them. They spoke about what they learned and experienced
during their time here and how these memories live on
within their hearts today. The Green and White dinner
continues to gain more recognition by our alumni and we
look forward to next year’s event,” said Doug Ternik
’89, Providence Catholic Athletic Director.
The Green & White Hall of Fame was created in 2005 to
recognize the outstanding athletes, teams, coaches and
benefactors who have participated in and contributed to
the rich athletic history of Providence Catholic High
School, which includes 25 state championship titles to
date.
The Class of 2008 Hall of Fame inductees are: Ed Olszta
‘74 (Baseball), Mary Sullivan Colbert ‘77 (Volleyball),
coaches Judith Legan (Varsity Track: 1972-1988) and Ken
Raymond (Varsity Track: 1965-2000) and benefactor Bishop
Roger Kaffer. In addition, the 1989 Wrestling State
Champions, the 1991 Football State Champions and the
1977 Track 440 Relay Team (Rick McTee ‘77, Frank Dolynka
‘77 and Mark Gariboldi ‘78) were also inducted to the
Hall of Fame.
Edwin “Eddie” Olszta ‘74 was a three-sport
athlete at Providence, but baseball was his passion. He
made the All Conference team in 1973 and 1974, the
Herald News All-Area Team in 1974 and was voted MVP by
his teammates. He was selected by the White Sox in the
14th round of the 1974 Amateur Draft, and played
professional baseball for three years thereafter. Ed
attended Lewis University. Ed has worked for Citgo
Corporation for 30 years.
Mary Sullivan “Sully” Colbert ‘77 played
volleyball her sophomore, junior and senior years at
Providence. She was voted MIP her junior year and MVP
in her senior year. She also served as co-captain.
Mary continued her volleyball career at Lewis University
on an athletic scholarship. She began her Providence
teaching and coaching careers in 1981 and is currently
an English teacher.
Judy Legan, Varsity Girls’ Track Coach from 1972
to 1988, has been a beloved member of the Providence
Catholic family for 38 years. Her coaching career is
equally impressive. The Girls’ Track Team finished in
the top five in State competition for five consecutive
years, beginning with the State Championship in 1978.
Judy was named “Coach of the Year” for Class A in 1982
by the Northern Illinois Track Coaches Association. She
taught Math for 17 years, served as Director of Studies
for 7 years, as Assistant Principal for 12 years, and
has been working part-time for PCHS for the past 3
years.
Ken Raymond, Varsity Boys’ Track Coach from 1965
to 2000, is as much a part of Providence Catholic as the
building itself. He began his teaching and coaching
career in 1965 after earning his B.A. degree from Lewis
College. He has taught Social Studies since that time
and has served as the Social Studies Department Chair
since 1971. Ken started the boys’ track program in the
spring of 1965 before he even began teaching at
Providence and started the girls’ track program a few
years later. He also introduced the boys’ and girls’
cross country programs in 1966 and 1977, respectively.
In his coaching career, Ken has experienced many
successes including Providence’s first state champion
and state record holder, the 4 x 100 relay team, in
1975.
Bishop Roger Kaffer, Benefactor, was appointed
Principal of Providence High School by Bishop Romeo
Blanchette in 1970, when the school was facing possible
closure. The accomplishments of Bishop Kaffer during
the 15 years that followed are the “stuff of legends,”
as he worked tirelessly alongside faculty, staff and
parent volunteers to make many physical improvements to
the school. Bishop Kaffer’s enthusiasm was contagious
and as a result, student enrollment grew from 558 in
1969 to over 800 in 1984. Bishop Kaffer’s spiritual
leadership during his tenure at Providence made an even
bigger impact than the physical expansion of the
school. He involved himself in people’s lives by making
home visits to every Providence family to better know
and understand his students and their families. He
referred to Providence as “his parish.”
Frank Dolynka ‘77 was a member 440-Relay Team,
which captured 3rd at State in 1977. He experienced
much more than mere running at Providence. He found a
path to self-discovery through discipline, teamwork,
friendship, sacrifice and humility. He learned how to
deal with success and failure, and all of these lessons
shaped him into the man he is today. Frank earned his
undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University
and his MBA from St. Louis University. He is employed
by Computer Sciences Corporation and resides in
Wildwood, MO.
Rick McTee ‘77 was also a member of the 1977
440-Relay Team, which captured 3rd at State. As a
member of the track and football teams, Rick learned
important life lessons from two coaches who have had an
enduring impact on his life, Ken Raymond and Matt
Senffner. Furthermore, he was an All-Conference
Offensive End his senior year. He graduated from Aurora
University in 1982 with a B.S. in Computer Science.
Rick and his wife, Gale, and their children, Zachary
(14) and Renee (11) reside in Shorewood. Rick is
employed by Alcatel-Lucent.
Mark “Mad Dog” Gariboldi '78
was a member of the 1977 440-Relay Team that captured
3rd at State. He was on the track team from sophomore
through senior year and the football team all four
years. Furthermore, Mark served as captain of the
track team in 1978. Currently, he helps out as an
assistant track coach at Providence. Mark attended
Lewis University where he earned his B.B.A. degree. He
is employed as a Financial Advisor Manager by 10
Investments in Downers Grove and Schaumburg, IL.
The 1989 State Champion Wrestling Team finished
28-0 winning four regular season tournaments along with
regional and sectional titles. They won the Class AA
State Championship and five team members brought home
individual medals, including three 1st place medals.
The 1989 title was the fourth State wrestling
championship for the Celtics. To date, Providence
Catholic has captured ten State wrestling titles.
The 1991 State Champion Football Team was the
second team in the Celtic football dynasty to bring home
a State Championship. They finished their season with a
perfect 14-0 record. The Celtics topped the Bloomington
Purple Raiders in the title game by a score of 9-3. To

Providence Catholic Concert Band Tours New York City
(New
Lenox) - The phrase “I love New York” has a special meaning to
the Providence Catholic Concert band, who recently performed a
series of concerts in New York City. Band members had the
opportunity to tour famous concert venues such as Carnegie Hall,
Radio City Music and the Lincoln Center for the Performing
Arts. The band also attended a performance of the New York
Philharmonic. “I set this tour up with three objectives in
mind,” said first year band director, Rocco Carioto. “I wanted
the students to experience what a professional musician
encounters when performing on the road. I also wanted the
students to be able to see professional musicians in action and
visit some of the great musical facilities in the world. We can
do these things at Providence because we have fantastic band
parents and chaperones, an administration that supports us 200%
and the best band students to be found anywhere. It’s their hard
work that has gotten us here.”
The
band members also had a private clinic with one of the principal
conductors of the New York City Opera, Steven Mosteller. The
conductor worked with the band for about 90 minutes. “It’s all
about personal growth and how far you can push yourself,” said
Carioto. “Our students were privileged to have a question and
answer session with the conductor who spoke about his schooling,
his career and what young musicians have to do to perform with
the New York Philharmonic.
The
Providence group also saw a performance of Phantom of the Opera
and had a private question and answer session with the actors.
The students learned where the actors went to school, their
daily routines and productions they have performed. “Our
objective for these tours was to instill a fire inside the
student’s soul for whatever endeavor they choose to do in life.
Goals are very attainable if you choose to work hard, sacrifice
and raise the bar high for yourself. Our music program reflects
this here at Providence,” offered Carioto.
The
band’s busy spring season will come to a close with its annual
Spring Concert on Monday, May 4 at 7pm. The performance will
take place in the school’s large gymnasium. Admission is free.

Providence Catholic hosts 5th Annual Poetry Slam
(New
Lenox) – Providence Catholic High School hosted their 5th Annual
Poetry Slam on April 1. Initiated by Ms. Soteria
Papagiannopoulos, PCHS Librarian and Ms. Mary Colbert, PCHS
English Teacher, the poetry slam continues to grow each year.
With nearly 30 participants and an audience of more than 60
students, faculty and parents, the poets recited original,
published and group poems.
“We
began the slams as a way of celebrating “National Poetry Month”
in April. We continued the slam because we were amazed at the
poems students wrote and this gave them a venue in which to
share their poems with their peers. Poetry is for the heart and
the spirit. It expresses the inexpressible; the poet is able to
express what we all feel and yearn in our souls but are unable
to put into words,” offered Ms. Papagiannopoulos.
A
panel of student and faculty judges rated each poem on a scale
of 5-10. Below are the winners of the 2009 Poetry Slam.

Providence
Catholic’s
Annual Fall
Harvest Drive
Tops $400,000
(New Lenox) –
Providence
Catholic High
School recently
concluded its
Annual Fall
Harvest Drive.
Through the hard
work of
students,
parents,
teachers and
other members of
the Providence
community, this
year’s Fall
Harvest Drive
has generated
more than
$403,000 to
date.
Harvest Drive
was initiated in
1968 to raise
funds for the
school, which
was facing a
financial
crisis. Faced
with the
prospect of
closure, the
school sponsored
a car raffle and
carnival that
generated
$15,000 the
first year and
$32,000 the
following year.
Pleased by the
results of this
fund-raising
effort, the
officials
decided not to
close the
school. Since
then, this
three-week
fundraiser has
grown to
generate more
than $400,000
annually to help
offset the
difference
between tuition
and the cost of
operating the
school.
To celebrate
this success,
the Providence
Catholic family
enjoyed the
traditional
spirit-filled
Harvest Drive
Olympics at the
conclusion of
this drive.
Several events
took place,
including dodge
ball,
tug-of-war,
jousting and a
faculty cart
race. The
Olympics
concluded with
the annual
pie-in-the-face-of-a-faculty-member;
this year’s
volunteer target
was Mr. Chris
Tagler, Social
Studies
Teacher.
The 2008 Harvest
Drive
top-selling
student was
junior Greg
Pestrak of Homer
Glen, who raised
$11,065 which
earned him free
tuition for the
second
semester.
Second place
top-seller was
sophomore
Leonard
Libersher of
Wilmington, who
raised $2,380
and third place
went to freshman
Amanda Cornelius
of Lemont, who
brought in
$1,900.
Following the
Olympics, Fr.
McGrath,
President of
Providence
Catholic, drew
eleven raffle
tickets and
named the
$10,000 Grand
Prize winner
along with 10
other winning
tickets totaling
$2,300. Raffle
winners and
their winning
ticket numbers
are posted on

Celebrates 90

(New

Richard McGrath,
President of
Providence
Catholic High
School, is proud
to announce that
the school is
marking their
ninetieth
anniversary. To
celebrate these
“90 Years of
Excellence,”
Providence
Catholic will

Those interested

Providence
Catholic is
located at 1800
W. Lincoln
Highway in New
Lenox.
This fall,
Providence
Catholic
welcomed 346
freshmen boys
and girls for
the next step in
their Catholic
education and
prepare them for
college and life
beyond. Despite
the challenging
economic time,
the school is
thriving with an
enrollment of
1,146 students.
The school’s
history began in
1918 when the
Diocese of
Joliet invited
the Sisters of
Providence to
take over a
small
secretarial
school for
Catholic girls
in Joliet. On
October 22 of
that year, the
school's name
was changed to
"Providence High
School". The
school building
was condemned as
a fire hazard in
1959. In 1962,
the new
Providence High
School opened in
New Lenox with
an enrollment of
340 students.
For the first
time, boys were
admitted to
Providence,
making the
school
co-institutional.
The school was
built with a
capacity for
800. In 1966,
the first
co-educational
class graduated
from
Providence.
By 1969,
however,
financial
problems
threatened to
close
Providence. The
number of
students was
diminishing
while the costs
of education was
rising. An
extraordinary
fund raising
campaign began
entitled S.O.S.
(Save Our
School). This
fundraiser
included a
raffle that
raised $30,000
for the school
and was the
precursor to
today’s Annual
Fall Harvest
Drive. In that
year, 557
students at
Providence
helped save the
school from
extinction.
Fr. Roger Kaffer
was appointed
Principal in
1970. Through
his tenure as
Principal, Fr.
Kaffer was
responsible for
numerous capital
improvements to
the campus
including: the
unique reclining
cross sculpture
that graces the
low wall in
front of the
school, the
Sacred Heart
Gymnasium, a six
classroom
Theology wing,
the Bishop
Blanchette
Memorial Library
and The
Christopher
Cooper Computer
Center. In
1984, Fr. Kaffer
had completed
his final
building project
at Providence,
leaving a legacy
of leadership,
spiritual growth
and building
improvements.
In the spring of
1985, Fr. Kaffer
was named
Assistant Bishop
of Joliet by
Pope John Paul
II.
The Order of
Saint Augustine
was invited by
the Joliet
Diocese to
manage the
school for the
1985-86 school
year. Fr.
Richard McGrath
was appointed
Principal and
with his
direction,
helped to make
Providence what
it is today.
Making the
school a college
preparatory
curriculum was
one initiative,
as was a refocus
on the spiritual
mission of the
school.
Attention was
made to
upgrading the
religious
studies course
work, and a
retreat program
was started. The
name of the
school was
changed to
"Providence
Catholic High
School" to
reflect these
changes. The
school decided
to limit
enrollment in
order to retain
a more personal
atmosphere with
students. The
Augustinians
maintained the
atmosphere of
Providence High
School and its
traditions, yet
made it a
academic
powerhouse and a
leader in
Catholic
education.
Important
capital
improvements
continued to be
made to the
campus. In 1993
the Computer
Writing and Data
Processing Lab
were installed.
Major
improvements
such as new
bleachers in the
large gym and
new windows in
the entire
school were
made. A new all
weather running
track was
installed with
the help of
grant money.
The school
embarked on the
capital campaign
that raised over
$2.8 million for
a new 35,000
square foot
addition that
houses the
science and fine
arts wing. The
school purchased
13 acres of
land for
athletic field
expansion and
the Bishop
Kaffer football
stadium was
renovated in
2004.
Providence
graduates are
admitted to
prestigious
colleges and
universities
nationwide whose
reputations are
considered among
the foremost of
American
universities.
More than 99% of
Providence
graduates go on
to higher
education and
since 1918 more
than 8,000
students have
graduated.
