Introducing Providence Catholic Children’s Academy

(New Lenox) – Fr. Richard McGrath, OSA, President of Providence Catholic High School (PCHS) is pleased to introduce Providence Catholic Children’s Academy.  Earlier this year the Providence Early Education Center (PEEC) engaged in an Image Marketing Assessment, wherein the faculty and staff of PEEC and PCHS, past and present PEEC parents, and local educators provided input about the school.  The goal was to identify perceptions held by various constituencies and to provide an objective analysis of the image and mission of the Early Education Center.  The findings of the assessment were very encouraging and affirming about their school and staff.  However, it provided an opportunity for improved marketability and visibility.

Effective July 1, the school’s name changed from the Providence Early Education Center to Providence Catholic Children’s Academy (PCCA).  The reason for this change is that it better establishes this facility as a Catholic grammar school as opposed to a childcare center.  The logo, which represents the school and signifies their values, was modified to include images of children and a cross.

The following is the school’s new mission statement:  Providence Catholic Children’s Academy was founded in 1992 under the direction of the Joliet Diocese and leadership of the Order of St. Augustine.  Serving the spiritual and educational needs of children ages 3-6 and their families, we provide a nurturing environment that builds the bridge from home to school. Professional, experienced teachers help develop the social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills of our students in a loving Christian atmosphere.   We inspire our children to reach their full academic potential and to succeed in school.

Providence Catholic Children’s Academy is located on the campus of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox and has available openings for the 2008-2009 school year.  Furthermore, there are a variety of schedule options available, including half-day or full-day Kindergarten.  Please call (815) 485-7129 with questions, to set up a tour of the school or to register your student.  For general information on the school please visit the school’s new website at www.providencecatholic.org

“Responsibility Matters” at Providence Catholic High School

(New Lenox) – In an effort to provide faculty, staff, students, and visitors with a cleaner, healthier and safer educational environment, Providence Catholic High School has implemented the “Responsibility Matters” Cleaning Program for its entire facility.  The Responsibility Matters Cleaning Program is a “green” housekeeping program created by PCS Industries, a partner in cleaning and responsible solutions.  This program helps the school select products, implement procedures and communicate a cleaning process that protects health without harming the environment.

“It’s easy to point to the operational savings and say that’s why we’re implementing the “Responsibility Matters” Cleaning Program, but the truth is that it is simply the right thing to do at our facility,” explains Larry Viano, Director of Maintenance. “Our most valued resource is the people that enter our building each day.  Some of them literally spend hundreds of hours in our facility each year.”

“This program differs from a traditional housekeeping regimen by having a more focused approach to Green Seal Certified cleaning chemicals, efficient tools and equipment along with best practices on how they are used.  Another important aspect is educating and getting our occupants more involved.  They’re an important part of keeping our facility clean, healthy and safe for everybody,” added Viano.

Only cleaning and maintenance chemicals that meet the high standards set by such agencies as Green Seal or Environmental Choice are selected for the Responsibility Matters Cleaning Program.  These companies are independent, non-profit organizations that identify and certify products that are the best available alternative and cause less toxic pollution and waste, conserve resources and minimize ozone depletion.  Additionally, the procedures for housekeeping utilize best practices for cleaning, health, safety, efficiency and consumption that affect both the occupants and workers.

Providence Catholic Hosts Annual Spring Blood Drive

(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School’s largest student organization, the Augustinian Youth Ministry (AYM), recently held its annual Spring Blood Drive.  The students, faculty members and even parents at Providence Catholic donated 115 units of blood, which may help as many as 345 people in need.  Due to the great number of donations, Heartland Blood Centers will donate $500 to AYM.  Students from AYM will be participating in this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and will put this donation towards their fundraising goal of $7,000.

Senior Paddy O’Connell of Orland Park made a special blood donation known as a Double Red Cell (DRC) collection.  During a DRC donation, a single, sterile needle is inserted to the donor’s arm and blood is withdrawn directly into a cell separator. The whole blood is separated into red blood cells and plasma. The red blood cells are then drawn into two separate bags, while the plasma and saline solution is returned to the donor.  This “double” procedure may help two individuals in need.

The Augustinian Youth Ministry is a service-based student organization with over 250 members.  Through a number of drives which include blood, clothing, food and toy, the students in AYM are doing a remarkable job in giving back to the community and in living the Christian values they have learned at Providence Catholic High School.

Providence Catholic students witness live surgery

(New Lenox) – Providence Catholic High School students recently took a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry to view “Live from the Heart,” a once in a lifetime experience to witness live surgery.  Thirty-five students from Mr. Pat White’s Human Physiology Class had the opportunity to observe open heart surgery, which was performed at Christ Hospital on February 13.  Broadcast live, via closed circuit television, students were able to view the surgery as well as verbally interact with the physicians and support staff by asking questions.

The quadruple bypass surgery was performed on a 59 year old male with a history of diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.  “Thanks to Christ Hospital, the Museum of Science and Industry and the patient who gave consent, students were able to witness the preparation, surgery and post rehabilitative steps necessary to sustain life following an open heart surgery.  This approach gave students a different perspective to actually see the structures rather than looking at diagrams in a book,” said White.

“Being able to actually see doctors keep a patient alive while operating was amazing.  This experience has made me realize the importance of medical technology,” offered PCHS senior Anna Dollinger. “Talking with the surgeons was my favorite part of this trip.  It was really interesting to hear them interact with one another and how they worked as a team,” added PCHS senior Jessica Johnson.

Providence Catholic students bring history to life

(New Lenox) – Ken Raymond, History Teacher for the past 43 years at Providence Catholic High School has a unique approach to teaching.  Accounting for 20% of their semester grade, his AP European History students recently gathered to reenact the roles of historical figures from the 18th Century Enlightenment period.  On Friday, January 11, Raymond’s students attended “The Salon,” which was located in the PCHS library.

Dressed head-to-toe in garments that depicted their characters, students vividly portrayed the personalities of these individuals, which they have studied for the past few months.  Each student selected a different character and shared their knowledge with fellow classmates.  Some infamous individuals included Elizabeth Montague, Cesare Beccaria, Mary Wollstonecraft and Louis XV.

Students were required to take their roles seriously.  Once they entered “The Salon” they were to play the role of their character and conduct themselves in a manner that would represent their character in that period.  “Students did a great job of bringing a clear understanding of their character’s ideas, life, goals and opinions,” said Raymond.

For approximately two hours, students were observed by a panel of teachers and students who watched them interact with one another.  During that time, students introduced themselves, gave a short oral biography to their peers and enjoyed refreshments.  In addition, they exchanged personal calling cards with their names and portraits.  Later, the students gathered to discuss their views on various issues relevant to the era.  Students were assessed on their preparation, presentation and their depth of understanding.  The students were very innovative; many students even incorporated semi-authentic accents.

At left, juniors Diana Carlstrom of New Lenox as Madame Pompadour, Matt Doran of Oak Forest as Thomas Paine and Maeve McCartin of Palos Park as Gabrielle Emilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Chatelet-Laumont.

Providence Catholic students “MixItUp” at lunch

(New Lenox) Providence Catholic High School students from S.T.A.N.D (Students Teaching Acceptance, Not Discrimination) sponsored “MixItUp at Lunch Day,” a national event that encourages students to sit with students other than their typical “lunch crowd” and become acquainted with individuals they might not interact with during the regular school day. During the lunch periods on Tuesday, November 13, each cafeteria table displayed a sign with a color; students were encouraged to sit at the table that corresponded with the predominant color of their shirt.

Based on nationwide MixItUp surveys from 2002-2005, 70% of students identified the school cafeteria as the setting where social boundaries are most clearly drawn.  Furthermore, 40% of students admitted that they had rejected someone from another group.  “The purpose of this exercise is for students to recognize and challenge social boundaries and potentially make new friends.  Students really seemed to embrace this change and I was proud to see many boundaries crossed,” said Mrs. Amy Potempa, Moderator of S.T.A.N.D. and PCHS Theology Teacher.
